Firefly Barbecue are an award winning sauce and rubs culinary delight, making barbecue an event, not just a burnt offering that needs covering in ketchup.
Aims & Objectives:
Firefly Barbecue have been crafting their wonderful sauces and rubs for several years but have never really managed to get into the types of retail establishments their products deserved. Firefly Barbecue knew their branding and packaging was holding them back and didn’t reflect their first class products – the brief was evolution, not revolution and that’s where we came in.

Firefly Barbecue’s new barbecue sauce packaging design has reignited their presence in the saturated sauces and rubs market, transforming their multi-award-winning products into a retail standout.
Bringing the Brand to Life
Understanding the importance of brand identity, we began by reimagining Firefly Barbecue’s logo. Drawing inspiration from their established name, we developed a sleek, elegant interpretation of the firefly. While it may seem like an obvious solution, it was a path previously unexplored\u2014and one that instantly resonated with the team at Firefly Barbecue.
Designing for Shelf Impact
To captivate the retail audience and deliver a premium look, the barbecue sauce packaging design needed to stand out. Competing in a crowded market meant creating something that would spark curiosity, clearly communicate heat levels, and simplify variety distinctions.
Here’s how we achieved it:
- Smouldering Dark Palette: Each product was given its own unique accent color to reflect its distinct personality, all grounded by a rich, smoky base tone.
- Barbecue Texture: A subtle griddle pattern across all packaging connected the products to their barbecue origins while adding a tactile, premium feel.
- Intuitive Heat Gauge: To address confusion around heat levels, we designed a simple, eye-catching temperature gauge at the label’s edge. This ensures customers can quickly identify whether the sauce or rub is mild, medium, or hot—making every purchase effortless.
