When we were approached by Calum MacDonald to help him with his vision for Donald from Skye – no-one knew just where this might go. From an initial drawing by his niece there was a young prototype Donald just waiting to be brought to life. The brief was originally to help with the face for the “doll” but it soon became apparent that Donald was going to be bigger than just a doll and he needed a brand. And what better brand could there be than Donald himself and so after a few tweaks Donald from Skye the brand was born.
We feel honoured to have been the branding team behind Donald From Skye and wish Calum, Donald and Fergie great success as they embark on this incredible journey.
A word from the Calum MacDonald …
“Having known Richard for a number of years and having used his services previously with Highland Wi-Fi, I knew I was dealing with a professional who I liked a lot and whose experience in the industry, left me with little doubt as to who to approach for Donald from Skye’s logo. At the time, the project was at the soft toy plushie stage, therefore Donald from Skye’s white t-shirt needed a real good logo to polish off his look. He was always going to wear a white t-shirt with his kilt and Richard would be given a white canvas to paint on. After the NDA had been signed, I was ready to let someone other than my family members and the soft toy company into Skye’s best secret in decades. Then there were 3. Me, Christian and Richard who were involved in bringing Donald to life from the original drawing.
Richards’ job was actually very difficult and he produced a choice of 5 designs for me to choose from. I knew instantly the one I liked the shape of and it looked the business from a visual perspective but his face just wasn’t working for me. So back and forth we went, back and forth, back and forth, it was like a really slow tennis rally and I was just dying for Richard to hit over the final winning ball. He did hit the screamer to the baseline, I was finally 100% with it and the logo was into the history books. The idea behind it and the reason I went for it was because it looked like a street sign and with his name being the way it is, it made sense from a thinking point of view also. The next step in the procedure was for the animator to then develop Donald from a mixture of both the logo and the soft toy.
Later on, during the project, there were a couple of occasions where Richards’ advice was sought and he once again proved his value to any business by offering his help and sound guidance.
I’m delighted with Richard once again and Black House Creative’s excellent and very important contribution, in bringing Donald from Skye to life. Thanking you kindly Richard. God bless.”
